CFP 2020: Apsara KASIRAMAN - a plus b to the n

Watch & Listen

When the pandemic hit, the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellows changed course from writing large chamber music projects to writing solo etudes for LA Phil musicians. Hear a plus b to the n by Apsara Kasiraman performed by Jeff Strong.

Program notes

Linking the fields of mathematics and music, a plus b to the n is a musical representation of the binomial theorem. Mathematically speaking, a and b represent different musical ideas, woven together using the binomial theorem as a model. The value of n dictates the order and number of times ideas a and b are played. Musically speaking, every time ideas a and b are repeated, a change occurs.
