CFP 2020: Luke STERLING - Luminosity

Program notes

This piece was inspired by the tendency of systems towards entropy. Over time, the emotion of the piece transitions slowly from calm, fluid tranquility to agitated, jagged tenseness. While writing the piece I imagined a city of light, far away from Earth, becoming infiltrated by darkness and succumbing to the wrath of the Shadow. The outline of this basic story is used in many ancient religious tales, including some from Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism, and more to describe the fall of the world to an imperfect state. But, in these stories, the returning of Light with a vengeance is predicted. At the end of the piece, the Light engages in battle with the growing Darkness, and eventually the Light regains its place on the throne, restoring luminosity, tranquility, and perfection.
