Program notes

When I was assigned to write a two-minute piece for the violin, I was extremely excited. As a singer and ex-violinist, I’ve always felt that the violin was the closest instrument to the human soprano voice. This piece reflects all of the feelings that have been surging through me and so many other people during the pandemic of 2020. My goal was to make the music convey unease, a quiet churning that I know we are all feeling. I also wanted to take a somewhat optimistic approach to these trying times through the title, Caprice(Sun). It’s a play on words, “caprice” being a musical term for an intense and lively piece, and a “Capris Sun” being a beloved fruity drink. This juxtaposition symbolizes the highs and lows that can be found even in the hardest times. Enjoy!
