...the other side was written as part of the LA Phil’s Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program in April 2020. It was composed in the midst of the social isolation, during a time fraught with fear and uncertainty. The piece begins and ends with the same gesture, an idea which was drawn from the continuing efforts being made to return society to the way it was before the global crisis began. While writing ...the other side, I was inspired by the works of Olivier Messiaen, Reinhold Glière, and György Ligeti. I wanted to write a piece that showcased both the sonority and the wide range of techniques that the horn is capable of.
