About this Performance
This continuation of the LA Phil's fruitful Pan-American Music Initiative highlights a group of composers, each with roots in a different Latin American country, who have been charting new courses in sound. Free of the Eurocentric mindset that for far too long dictated the trajectory and perceived value of classical music, these composers bring their distinct voices to the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage to paint a vision of a region where music is rooted in tradition but dreams on the edge of the horizon. While each composer is distinct in their aesthetic, an embrace of rhythm and the desire to explore boundless sonic possibilities unifies them. By sharing this work, Gabriela Ortiz hopes to broaden the perception of new music from the Americas, dissolving stereotypes while inspiring the next generation of Latinx artists to create beyond borders.
