Program

About this Performance

Revolución diamantina is Gabriela Ortiz’s bold response to the 2019 feminist uprising around Mexico’s epidemic of violence against women. Named after an event where protesters threw pink glitter at Mexico City’s chief of police to denounce the rape of a woman by local officers, “Ortiz’s atmospheric, percussion-rich score fizzes with a sense of restless unease” (BBC Music Magazine).

Gustavo Dudamel says, “Gabriela Ortiz’s music speaks to both the body and the spirit, full of visceral primeval rhythms and mysterious, soulful sound-worlds.” As a testament to their amazing partnership, Dudamel revisits the Grammy-winning Revolución diamantina. And for the first time ever, Ortiz’s music is set in motion, with Grupo Corpo—the internationally renowned dance company known for its blend of popular Brazilian culture, African rhythms, and classical technique.

To kick off the program, Dudamel channels the ecstatic, whirling energy of Beethoven’s Seventh, described by the composer himself as his “most excellent symphony.” Its introduction simmers and builds with sweet woodwind phrases between booming string chords, eventually soaring ahead to a prancing finale with joyful mania.

A note from Gustavo Dudamel

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony begins with an immediate sense of motion. From the opening, rhythm is the engine of the music, carrying it forward with clarity and exhilaration. Wagner described the symphony as “the apotheosis of the dance,” and that idea feels present throughout—not as spectacle, but as an underlying physical impulse that shapes every phrase. Opening the concert this way is unusual, but it establishes a feeling of shared energy from the very start.

After intermission, that sense of movement takes a new form in Gabriela Ortiz’s Revolución diamantina. The Los Angeles Philharmonic and I premiered this powerful work in concert in 2023, and the subsequent recording on Platoon was awarded three Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammys. From the beginning it felt alive with purpose—Gabriela’s response to Mexico’s 2019 Glitter Revolution is both personal and collective, rooted in movement and pulse, and shaped by voices that demand attention.

Performing this ballet with Grupo Corpo is a great privilege, Revolución diamantina reflects the way music today travels easily across cultures and traditions, finding strength in exchange rather than definition. It is music that speaks through rhythm and movement, and through the simple act of coming together. —Gustavo Dudamel
