About this Performance
The LA Phil continues its series of free neighborhood concerts! By bringing live classical music directly to audiences across the county, this series builds, deepens, and diversifies our relationships with local music lovers.
Join members of the orchestra for a selection of cheerful and upbeat chamber music by Mozart, Poulenc, and Jessie Montgomery. Oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano come together for Mozart’s E-flat Quintet, a piece that the composer said, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.” It’s a light and lyrical discussion between winds and piano that is both tricky and playful—much like Poulenc’s witty and sparkling Trio!
That simultaneous spirit of creativity and challenge also flows freely in Voodoo Dolls. Montgomery’s string quartet is heavily influenced by West African drumming patterns and lyrical chant motives, representing not only these soothsaying figurines, but marionettes, Barbies, Russian dolls, rag dolls, and other traditional children’s toys. The string players follow the quintet with another: Strum, Montgomery’s nostalgic yet ecstatic celebration filled with American folk melodies and the spirit of dance.
Be sure to take your seat at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the concert. If you are not seated before the start of the concert, seats may be given to other attendees. The program will be presented without intermission.
We are pleased to present this event in partnership with Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, and Los Angeles Mission College.
