The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association is currently seeking a: 

Teaching Artist (Cello)– YOLA at LACHSA

Founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's mission is to perform, present, and promote music in its varied forms at the highest level of excellence to a diverse and large audience, both at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.  The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association is dedicated to continuing its pre-eminent status in the music world of the 21st century.

Program Summary:

YOLA at LACHSA is the third site of Gustavo Dudamel’s signature program, Youth Orchestra LA. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that provides half-a-million children with free musical instruments and intensive musical instruction. Central to YOLA’s mission is the promotion of healthy growth and development through the study, practice and performance of music. Simultaneously, YOLA positively invests in each child’s development as a musical ambassador of peace, hope, and understanding amongst a diverse population of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. YOLA at LACHSA currently serves more than 120 elementary, middle, and high school students.

Position Summary:

Responsible for beginning and intermediate cello instruction at YOLA at LACHSA, a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and LACOE (Los Angeles County Office of Education). He or she will ensure the highest quality learning experience for YOLA at LACHSA students, create curriculum, pedagogy, and lesson plans in collaboration with other YOLA at LACHSA music faculty, and support each child holistically. He or she will support the YOLA philosophy and community, and help facilitate community and family involvement.

Hours for this position will be approximately 14 hours per week (Mondays, Tuesday, Thursday: 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm, Saturdays 9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Position Elements:

As a YOLA at LACHSA faculty member responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Collaborating with YOLA at LACHSA faculty to create a shared curriculum and culture inspired by the ideals and philosophies of El Sistema
  • Instructing beginning and intermediate cellists consisting of up to 30 elementary, middle and high school aged students
  • Assisting with full orchestra rehearsals, playing in the section, collaborating with the YOLA Conductor
  • Communicating with YOLA at LACHSA academic tutors and parents to understand each child holistically
  • Attending music pedagogy and tutoring professional development sessions
  • Preparation and communication with music teachers, YOLA Conductor, Program Manager, and LA Philharmonic Staff.

Position Requirements:

  • Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher and performer
  • Four-year undergraduate degree required; post-graduate degree preferred, but not required
  • Strong knowledge of standard music pedagogy
  • Strong experience teaching beginning and intermediate cello
  • Strong knowledge of cello repertoire, curriculum, and pedagogy
  • Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents and peers as an artist and teacher
  • Ability to work under frequent observation
  • Strong collaborative skills
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
