Dennis Garcia is an Elder of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians and serves as Chair of the tribe’s Elders Council. A respected Los Angeles–based culture bearer, Garcia is dedicated to preserving and sharing the living traditions of his people through storytelling, song, and traditional dance.
Grounded in generations of knowledge, his work centers on the transmission of Tataviam cultural practices, language, and history, ensuring that these traditions remain vibrant and accessible to future generations. Garcia has shared his teachings across Southern California in community gatherings, educational settings, and cultural institutions, where he fosters deeper understanding of Indigenous lifeways and the enduring presence of Native communities in the region.
Through his role as an Elder and cultural leader, Garcia continues to guide intergenerational learning and community connection, using performance and oral tradition as powerful tools for cultural continuity, visibility, and respect.
