Born: 1970, Des Moines, Iowa

Trained at Cornell University, James Matheson has become a major musical presence, an accomplished composer of songs, chamber music, and important orchestral scores. His works includes commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall and performances by the Borromeo String Quartet and Dawn Upshaw. Matheson was director of the LA Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program 2009 to 2015, and has received the Charles Ives Living from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
