CHARLIE MEENAGHAN is a high school senior at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. Charlie first discovered composition as a sophomore. In the fall of 2017, Charlie joined the LA Phil Composer Fellowship and began private study with Professor Ian Krouse of UCLA. Since then, Charlie has had works performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall by members of Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra and has received top honors from numerous competitions. This past year, Charlie won first prize nationally in the NFMC Junior Composers Awards, the Golden Key Piano Composition Competition, and the MTAC Composers Today Contest. Charlie also received second prize in the MYO Emerging Composers Contest, an honorable mention from the American Composer’s Forum NextNotes Competition, and an ‘Emerging Composer’ designation from Tribeca New Music’s Young Composer Competition. Furthermore, Charlie will visit New York this winter to be honored by the ASCAP Foundation as a winner of the prestigious Morton Gould competition and the recipient of a special designation, the Charlotte V. Bergen Award for the top pre-college composer.
Charlie most recently attended Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute for composition, studying with Martin Amlin and Justin Casinghino as well as participating in master classes with artists including John Wallace and Nico Muhly. Now back in LA, Charlie is looking forward to another great year with CFP.
