Łukasz Borowicz

Born in Warsaw in 1977, ŁUKASZ BOROWICZ studied at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw, where he received a doctorate in conducting under Antoni Wit. He was Assistant Conductor to Kazimierz Kord at the Warsaw National Opera, to Antoni Wit at the Warsaw Philharmonic, and to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In the years 2007-2015 he was Chief Conductor of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 he was appointed Chief Guest Conductor of the Poznan´ Philharmonic Orchestra, a title he retains. He held several grants from the Polish Ministry of Culture and is a prizewinner of four conducting competitions: in Trento (1999), Athens (2000), Porto (2002), and Bamberg (2004). He has worked closely with Professor Penderecki, who remains a major influence.

Borowicz has appeared as a guest conductor with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, SWR Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Hamburger Symphoniker, Wiener Volksoper, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, and all the major Polish symphony orchestras.

Łukasz Borowicz has conducted at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro (the Haydn Orchestra  with Ewa Podleś) and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Moniuszko’s Halka with the NDR Radiophilharmonie). He made his operatic debut with Don Giovanni at the Warsaw National Opera in Warsaw followed by Orfeo ed Euridice, Midsummer Night's Dream and The Rite of Spring. Further operatic credits include: Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin, and Halka (Kraków Opera), Die Zauberflöte, Rusalka, Bluebeard’s Castle, and Dido and Aeneas (Grand Theatre in Łódź), and Szymanowski’s King Roger (ABAO Bilbao). He has conducted ballet performances at the Warsaw National Opera (Swan Lake, La Bayadère). His extensive discography includes recordings with Ewa Podleś, Piotr Beczala, Mariusz Kwiecien, and Samuel Ramey.

Borowicz’s commitment to rare operatic repertoire is also evident in his ongoing work with the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw.

A prolific recording artist, his recordings have been awarded two Diapason d’Or Prizes, two Fryderyk Chopin Prizes and were nominated for the Midem Classical Awards (2008) and the Preis der Deutschen Schalplattenkritik (2009). They also featured as the BBC Orchestral and Opera Choice on several occasions. His collaboration with Piotr Beczala on the Deutsche Grammophon recording of Heart's Delight - Songs of Richard Tauber (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was met with critical and public praise. Borowicz’s symphonic recordings include the Complete Violin Concertos by Bacewicz for Chandos and the Complete Symphonic Works by Andrzej Panufnik (Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin for CPO). The final installment of the Panufnik cycle was “Editor’s Choice” in Gramophone magazine and Borowicz received the ICMA Special Achievement Award in 2015 for his pioneering work on the cycle.

In the 2014/15 season, he returned to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and made his debuts with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland, SWR Symphony, and the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana. He also made his debut at the Nantes-Angers Opera, conducting Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, where his artistic leadership was highly acclaimed. In 2015/16 he returns to the SWR and the Philharmonie Zuidnederland, and debuts with the Trondheim Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group. After a successful debut in China in 2013, Borowicz also returns to the China Philharmonic and Guangzhou Symphony in April 2016, as well as returning to Berlin to begin a new collaboration with the RIAS Kammerchor and Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin.
