Conductor Juanjo Mena makes his Hollywood Bowl debut leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic and sibling pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque performing Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, Thursday, September 1, at 8 pm. The night’s performances also include Falla’s Interlude and Dance from La vida breve and Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 2, as well as Debussy’s Ibéria.
Juanjo Mena is the newly appointed chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester and has led prestigious orchestras worldwide. Born in the Basque region of Spain, Mena began his early musical training at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Conservatory and has become one of the most distinguished Spanish conductors of his generation. He was awarded in 2002 with the Ojo Critico Prize by Radio Nacional de España in recognition of his career and dedication to contemporary music.
Katia and Marielle Labèque are sibling pianists renowned for their ensemble of synchronicity and energy. Their musical ambitions started at an early age and they rose to international fame with their contemporary rendition of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and have since developed a stunning career with performances worldwide. They recently released a CD recording of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Bernstein’s West Side Story on their own label, KML Recordings. The Labèques created KML Recordings to reflect their aspiration to build a bridge crossing all aspects of contemporary creation.
