  • LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC PRESENTS FREE NEIGHBORHOOD CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT OF LATIN-THEMED MUSIC
  • Jan. 20, 2003
  • St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Monday, January 20, 2003, 8 PM

Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform woodwind music by Villa-Lobos and D'Rivera during a free program of chamber music on Monday, January 20, 2003 at 8 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2760 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles. Free parking is available at the St. Sophia Cathedral, one half-block south of Pico on Normandie. For information please call 323/737-2424 or 323/737-3325 en Español.

The program begins with Villa-Lobos' Quinteta em forma de chôros for winds written in 1928 while Villa-Lobos was living in Paris. His musical style, at first rejected, became the subject of great enthusiasm within the Parisian avant-garde community during the 1920s. The program concludes with Cuban-American clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Paquito D'Rivera's Aires tropicales for woodwind quintet. Since its premiere in 1994, this piece has exemplified D'Rivera's ability to blur the lines between classical music and jazz.

This concert is made possible by the Byzantine-Latino Quarter Foundation. The Neighborhood Concert program is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from Target Corporation with additional funding provided by The William Randolph Hearst Foundations and Morgan Stanley. The California Arts Council, a state agency, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, also support this program.

Neighborhood and community concerts are an opportunity for residents in areas surrounding Los Angeles to experience the Los Angeles Philharmonic free or at a low cost. Upcoming neighborhood and community concerts in our 2002/2003 season include performances on February 7, at First Baptist Church, Pomona, and February 8, at Los Angeles Presbyterian Church, Los Angeles.
