  • Mar. 27, 2017
  • Festival Includes Work from Shoplifter, Xárene Eskandar and Siggi Eggertsson

Björk Digital Exhibition Will Take Place  May 19 to June 4 at Magic Box at The Reef

As part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Reykjavík Festival, a celebration of the profound artistic community from Iceland's capital, visual art from leading Icelandic artists will be showcased April 1 to 17 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. This will include contributions from Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir (aka Shoplifter), Xárene Eskandar and Siggi Eggertsson.

Shoplifter will unveil a new, LA Phil-commissioned, site-specific installation, Nervescape VI, in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall. Made from synthetic hair extensions and rope, the installation will be unveiled in conjunction with a performance from Icelandic band amiina during Opening Night: Made in Iceland – Live on April 7. Nervescape VI will be on display for the duration of the festival.

The LA Phil presents the U.S. premiere of Xárene Eskandar’s Driving at the speed of the Nordic sun, a 4-hour single-take film featuring a soundtrack by Eskandar using segments of Emergence 1 Silence from Over Light Earth by Reykjavík Festival co-curator Daníel Bjarnason. Beginning April 1 and continuing until April 17, the film will be screened continuously outdoors in the W.M. Keck Foundation Children's Amphitheatre. Public screenings begin 9AM daily and run until 90 minutes before performances, when the garden is closed for the show.

The Festival will also include commissioned imagery from the acclaimed visual artist Siggi Eggertsson.

As a special addition to the Reykjavík Festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association presents the West Coast premiere of Björk Digital, an exhibition of groundbreaking digital and virtual reality (VR) video works featuring music from the artist’s latest album, Vulnicura. Björk Digital will run from May 19 to June 4 at Magic Box at The Reef in downtown Los Angeles. Tickets are still available for the exhibition.

A pioneer in music, art, and technology, Björk has worked with a collection of world-renowned directors, programmers, and visual artists to create a series of innovative virtual reality works displayed throughout a series of rooms. Björk Digital will invite guests to experience these immersive works through the latest in virtual reality technology.

The Björk Digital exhibition is a series of experiences: five VR experiences where users are transported with custom headsets; the Black Lake room, a custom-built immersive space featuring a bespoke, cutting-edge surround sound set up to create an immersive and visceral virtual reality experience; the Biophilia room, a hands-on educational space which showcases Björk's innovative apps, encouraging users to dive into an exploration of musicology, science and technology; and finally, the Cinema room, a curated program of Björk’s extensive and groundbreaking music videos spanning her career thus far, remastered for a unique exhibition cinema experience. Included will be videos directed by Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Alexander McQueen, and many more.

Björk will be making her Walt Disney Concert Hall debut on May 30 with orchestra. The show quickly sold out after tickets went on sale.

Special thanks to Bowers & Wilkins, the official audio collaborator for Björk Digital.
