Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform the music of John Adams, Maurice Ravel, and Albert Roussel during an evening of chamber music on Monday, March 10 at 8 p.m. The concert takes place in Gindi Auditorium at the University of Judaism, and is part of the Philharmonic's On Location Residency with John Adams.

Arguably the best-known American composer, John Adams wrote his solo piano piece, China Gates, in 1977; the work opens the program. Originally written for novice pianists, China Gates is the result of Adams' aim to create a sound influenced by early 20th-century French piano music.

Ravel's Piano Trio (1914), his third chamber work, demonstrates how colorfully the French master could transform folk music. Roussel began his musical career considerably later in life, following a military career. His music continues to grow in popularity, and his Poèmes de Ronsard for flute and voice is included on the program.

Adams' 1994 John's Book of Alleged Dances completes the program with its set of eleven short pieces for string quartet. As does Ravel's Piano Trio, this suite draws on various folk elements - in Adams' case, a Western hoe-down and a Protestant hymn-tune - for inspiration.

The Philharmonic's On Location Residency with John Adams is in two parts this spring. In addition to this concert, Salonen leads the first performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic of Adams' masterwork, El Niño, on March 13, 15, and 16. Salonen also leads two works in New York City when the orchestra is presented by Lincoln Center's Great Performers series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (March 20 and 22; N.Y. premiere of El Niño) and at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall (March 24; Adams' Naive and Sentimental Music). In addition to the subscription and Green Umbrella performances, Adams will participate in pre-concert discussions and symposia in both Los Angeles and New York, as well as make visits to local Los Angeles School Partners classes.

Chamber Music Society concerts offer an opportunity to enjoy intimate music-making by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and special guests. Chamber Music Society concerts are presented in association with the Norman and Sadie Lee Foundation with additional funding by Wendell and Bernice Jeffrey.
