  • Mar. 21, 2003
  • SATURDAY, APRIL 26 FROM 10 AM TO 1 PM

    Dorothy Chandler Pavilion's Salvatori Room

On Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association hosts keyNotes: Focus on Shostakovich, held in the Salvatori Room in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. This event is free and open to the public. This session focuses on dialogue and debate concerning the life and career of Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich- as part of the Philharmonic's five-year Shostakovich cycle.

Musicologist Laurel Fay examines Shostakovich and the conflicts that surrounded him during his life and after his death in 1975. Her lecture will be followed by an engagingpanel discussion on censorship - both government and corporate - and its effects on Soviet music and art and on contemporary American culture. Los Angeles Times columnist John Balzar, USC Slavic Languages and Literature professor John Bowlt, former President of the ACLU of Southern California, Stephen Rohde, screenwriter Christopher Trumbo (son of blacklisted screenwriter and novelist Dalton Trumbo), famed guitarist and writer Mason Williams (The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour) join Laurel Fay in this lively debate. Writer Earl Ofari Hutchison (author of Beyond O.J.: Race, Sex, and Class Lessons for America) moderates.

keyNotes, two free Saturday morning seminars on great music, take you behind the scenes of the music played by the Philharmonic. Attendees get to know the panelists and learn about the relationship of music to history, literature, science, and the other arts, as well as gain the opportunity to meet musicians from the orchestra and hear from visiting composers and inspiring speakers.

Concerts featuring music by Shostakovich by the Los Angeles Philharmonic are scheduled in April and May. For tickets and information, please call (323) 850-2000 or visit www.laphil.org.
