FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 & 2, AT 8:30 PM

August 1 sponsored by Patina Group

August 2 sponsored by Renaissance Hollywood Hotel

Bring on the cannons! Conductor Bramwell Tovey, who makes his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut, leads the orchestra in an all-Tchaikovsky program Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2 at 8:30 p.m. One of the Hollywood Bowl's most popular and beloved events, the "Tchaikovsky Spectacular" returns to the Bowl with Capriccio italien, the Violin Concerto with soloist Tamaki Kawakubo, and an appearance by the USC Trojan Marching Band, led by Dr. Arthur C. Bartner, to perform the 1812 Overture complete with fireworks.

BRAMWELL TOVEY's conducting career has taken him around the world and led to invitations from many of the world's greatest orchestras. He appears throughout Canada and the United States; in the United Kingdom with the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, and Ulster Orchestras; throughout continental Europe; and in Israel. Also a respected composer and former artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Tovey founded the acclaimed Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival in 1992. He currently holds the music director post for the Vancouver Symphony.

Violinist TAMAKI KAWAKUBO began her studies at the age of five in Los Angeles and has studied at the Colburn School of Performing Arts as well as The Julliard School. A winner of the 2001 Sarasate International Violin Competition, Kawakubo has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Rochester Philharmonic, the New York Chamber Symphony and the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Kawakubo plays the 1707 "Cathedral" Stradivarius, on loan from the Mandell Collection of Southern California. Kawakubo last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 1997.

Since it was founded in 1880, the USC TROJAN MARCHING BAND has grown to become the largest spirit group on the University of Southern California campus. The 250-member band has performed regularly at the Hollywood Bowl in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. They have also appeared at the Liberty
Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. The contemporary Trojan Band began in 1970, when Dr. Arthur C. Bartner assumed leadership of the group. The Band's most recent Hollywood Bowl appearance was at last year's Tchaikovsky Spectacular.
