  • John de Lancie Hosts Program Featuring Haley Joel Osment Narrating Prokofiev's Peter And The Wolf

    SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15

CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS AT 10 AM; CONCERT AT 11 AM

    Sponsored by Toyota

Assistant Conductor Yasuo Shinozaki leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the orchestra's first Toyota Symphonies For Youth concert of the 2003/04 season at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall, hosted by John de Lancie on Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. The program includes the world premiere performance of Tan Dun's new work Inventions for Paper Instruments and Orchestra, and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf narrated by Haley Joel Osment.

Tan Dun's new piece, commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is an interactive orchestral work that pays homage to the Chinese composer's ancestors who invented the world's first fine paper, and celebrates the harmony of man and nature. The composer, who won an Oscar for his score for the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, blends Eastern and Western musical systems creating a form of "organic music."

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Toyota Symphonies For Youth series take place on six Saturday mornings. This year, the series focuses on the theme of invention and is designed to engage children in extraordinary music performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Before every concert, the Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes a musical playground with hands-on art-making, musical activities, dance, theater, and storytelling. Workshops take place in BP Hall one hour prior to the performance.

The conceptual and multifaceted composer/conductor TAN DUN has made an indelible mark on the world's music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical, multimedia, and Eastern and Western musical systems. A winner of today's most prestigious honors-the Grawemeyer Award for classical composition, Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Musical America's Composer of the Year"-Tan Dun's music has been played throughout the world by leading orchestras, opera houses, international festivals, and on radio and television. His current commissions include a new opera for the Metropolitan Opera and James Levine to premiere in 2007 and a symphony for the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle. Tan Dun has lead many of the world's leading orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, Boston Symphony, National Orchestra de France, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Montreal Symphony, NHK Symphony of Japan, National Orchestra de Lyon, Sydney Symphony, and the London Sinfonietta.
