The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association continues its new Baroque Variations series with a performance by the Venice Baroque Orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Andrea Marcon, the program features Baroque violinist Giuliano Carmignola in an all-Vivaldi program.

The only Venetian orchestra specializing in the performance of early music on period instruments, the Venice Baroque Orchestra performs Sinfonia in C Major from Il Giustino, RV 717; Concerto in G minor for strings and continuo, RV 157; Violin Concerto in E-flat Major, RV 257; Violin Concerto in C Major, RV 177, and The Four Seasons.

The Baroque Variations series continues with cellist Pieter Wispelwey performing Bach's six unaccompanied Cello Suites on Thursday, March 11, 2004; and Boston Baroque performing Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 on Tuesday, June 8, 2004.

Founded in 1997 by some of the finest musicians in Italy, the VENICE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA is already recognized as one of Europe's leading new ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. Led by the Baroque scholar and performer Andrea Marcon, the orchestra has received wide critical acclaim not only for its debut concerts in Paris, Zurich, Munich, and Vienna, but for the first stage performances in modern times of Handel's opera Siroe. Since signing exclusively with Sony Classical, the orchestra has recorded two all-Vivaldi albums with violinist Giuliano Carmignola.

The Italian conductor, organist, and harpsichordist, ANDREA MARCON, studied with Vanni Ussardi, gaining diplomas in organ and harpsichord. He continued his studies at the Basel Music Academy's Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 1983 to 1987 under Jean-Claude Zehnder, Jesper Christensen and Jordi Savall, among others, and graduated in Early Music, Organ and Harpsichord. At this time he also began specializing in Italian music with Ferdinando Tagliavini. Highly active as a concert performer, he has played in the most prestigious festivals and musical centers of Europe - as organist, harpsichordist, and with the instrumental ensemble the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca recording as well for various television and radio networks. He teaches harpsichord and early music performance at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Violinist GIULIANO CARMIGNOLA has been gaining international recognition through his performances with the Venice Baroque Orchestra. He began his studies with his father and trained at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice. He also attended master classes with Nathan Milstein and Franco Gulli at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and with Henryk Szeryng at the Geneva Conservatory. A professor of violin at the Venice Conservatory for ten years, Carmignola also served as concertmaster of the orchestra of Teatro La Fenice from 1978 to 1985. In working with the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Musica, and now the Venice Baroque Orchestra, Carmignola has become a leading exponent of the Baroque violin style, particularly in Italian music of the 18th-century.
