Powerful Dvorák Symphony No. 7 is Featured With Music of Janácek

Concerto for Bass Viol and Orchestra is a Co-Commission of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association

Carlos Kalmar, Music Director of the Oregon Symphony, makes his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut leading the dramatic Symphony No. 7 by Dvorák, on Friday, November 24, and Saturday, November 25, at 8 p.m., and on Sunday, November 26 at 2 p.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The program includes the West Coast premiere of American composer John Harbison's Concerto for Bass Viol and Orchestra with Philharmonic Principal Bassist Dennis Trembly as soloist, and the suite from Janácek's opera The Cunning Little Vixen Suite.

John Harbison is one of America's most distinguished artistic figures. He has written for every conceivable type of ensemble, ranging from the grandest to the most intimate, and his works embrace everything from jazz to pre-classical forms. His music is considered to be "original, varied, and absorbing - relatively easy for audiences to grasp and yet formal and complex enough to hold interest through repeated hearings - his style boasts both lucidity and logic." (Fanfare) Concerto for Bass Viol was commissioned by The International Society of Double Bassists for a consortium of major orchestras, and is co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

Conductor CARLOS KALMAR was born in Uruguay in 1958 to Austrian parents. He showed an interest in music at an early age and began studying violin at age six. By age 15 his musical development led him to the Vienna Academy of Music where he studied conducting with Karl Osterreicher. Carlos Kalmar is in his fourth season as the Music Director of the Oregon Symphony and is also the Music Director of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. Kalmar's most recent recordings include the 2006 release of Szymanowski, Martinu and Bartok's Violin Concertos with the Grant Park Orchestra and Jennifer Koh, and the 2003 release of the Joachim and Brahms Violin Concertos featuring Rachel Barton and the Chicago Symphony, and American Works for Organ and Orchestra featuring David Schrader and the Grant Park Orchestra (2002), all on the Cedille Records label.

A native of Long Beach, DENNIS TREMBLY learned to play the bass with the help of David Borkenhagen, John Palacios, Peter Mercurio, and Nat Gangursky. Just before his senior year in high school, Trembly studied with Stuart Sankey at the Aspen School of Music on a full scholarship, and the following three years continued this collaboration at the Juilliard School on a Naumberg scholarship. Trembly joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1970 and became one of two principal bassists during the 1973/74 season. The Philharmonic has presented him as a soloist in Green Umbrella, Campus Concerts, and Symphonies for Youth performances. Other orchestras which have featured him in concerto appearances include the Merced, La Mirada, Santa Monica, and Long Beach symphonies, and the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra. In addition to appearing with distinguished Philharmonic colleagues on its Chamber Music Society series, Trembly has performed chamber music with such musicians as Menahem Pressler, Midori, Pinchas Zukerman, John Perry, Antoinette Perry, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld, Donald McInnes, Cynthia Phelps, and Milton Thomas. Trembly has been a faculty member at the University of Southern California Flora L. Thornton School of Music since 1981.
