  • CELLIST HAN-NA CHANG FEATURED IN RECITAL OF WORKS BY SCHUMANN, SHOSTAKOVICH, AND CHOPIN AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL
  • Dec. 3, 2006
  • SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 AT 7:30 PM

Series endowed by a generous grant from the Colburn Foundation

Acclaimed Korean-born cellist Han-Na Chang presents a recital with pianist Sergio Tiempo in a Los Angeles Philharmonic Association Colburn Celebrity Series concert on Sunday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The two artists perform Schumann's Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 (originally conceived and composed as a piece for horn and piano), Shostakovich's Cello Sonata, Op. 40, and Chopin's Cello Sonata, Op. 65, and Polonaise Brillante, Op. 3.

Chang has established an extraordinary international career, performing regularly on the most prestigious concert stages of Europe, North America and Asia. Since winning the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris at the age of 11 in 1994, her superb artistry and virtuosity coupled with the astonishing depth of her interpretations have placed her at the forefront of the world's new generation of artists. Argentine pianist Tiempo, heralded by critics as one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation, has quickly risen to international prominence since making his professional debut at the age of 14 in the "Great Pianists" series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He now appears regularly in recitals and with orchestras in the leading halls of the Americas, Europe, and Japan.

In 1994 at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris, cellist HAN-NA CHANG took the First Prize as well as the Contemporary Music Prize, unanimously chosen for both awards by Rostropovich and 10 other jury members. A two time Grammy nominee and an exclusive recording artist for EMI Classics, Chang made her first recording in November 1995 with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra, featuring Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1, Fauré's Elegie and Bruch's Kol Nidrei. The sensational success of her debut album, which brought Chang the Young Artist of the Year Award of the ECHO Klassik-Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, was followed by her recording of the two Haydn Cello Concertos with Giuseppe Sinopoli directing the Staatskapelle Dresden. The Swan, her third album, is an anthology of short works for cello and orchestra recorded with Leonard Slatkin and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Her most recent recording with Antonio Pappano directing the LSO, has been awarded the ECHO Klassik Concerto Recording of the Year, the Cannes Classical Award's Concerto Recording of the Year, the Caecilia Prize and voted the best Concerto Recording of the Year by Gramophone. All four releases have become best sellers worldwide. Chang's much-anticipated next recording will be released this year. An avid recitalist, Chang maintains a balance between her appearances with orchestras and her chamber music activities. She has performed with many of the world's great orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony, the London Symphony, the Orchestre de Paris, the La Scala Philharmonic of Milan, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome, and the U.S. orchestras of Boston, Chicago Cleveland Symphony, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Washington, D.C..

SERGIO TIEMPO has performed under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Vladimir Spivakov, and Michael Tilson Thomas and worked with such prestigious orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Montreal Symphony, the Orchestra Sinfonica dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic. He has played at various major international music festivals including the Salzburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Colmar, and the Verbier Festivals. He has been a guest at the Martha Argerich and Friends Festival in Munich and the Festival Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in Bergamo and performs annually at the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano. Tiempo has recorded Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit, and three Chopin Nocturnes as part of the EMI Classics "Martha Argerich Presents" series. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Tiempo began his piano studies with his mother, Lyl Tiempo, at the age of two years and made his concert debut when he had just turned three. He received further lessons from Tessa Nicholson, Maria Curcio, Pierre Sancan, Michel Béroff, Jacques Detiege, and Alan Weiss. While at the Fondazione per il Pianoforte in Como, Italy, he worked with Dimitri Bashkirov, Fou Ts'ong, Murray Perahia, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has received frequent musical guidance and advice from Martha Argerich, Nelson Freire, and Nikita Magaloff. His awards include the 1986 Alex De Vries Prize of Belgium and four first prizes at the 1980 Ealing Music Festival in London, where he was honored with a special prize as the most talented participant at the age of eight. Future engagements include concerts with Dudamel with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, recitals in Amsterdam, Paris, Lugano, and Antwerp, a Salzburg Festival debut, a two-piano recital with Martha Argerich in Rotterdam, and a tour of Korea with Mischa Maisky.
