  • SECOND ANNUAL "TASTE OF THE BOWL"
  • May. 4, 2002
  • SATURDAY, MAY 4, FROM 10 AM-5 PM

Free Day-Long Event Featuring Live Entertainment and Gourmet Food

The second annual Taste of the Bowl, a free event celebrating the opening day of the Hollywood Bowl box office, takes place Saturday, May 4 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Featuring live music and entertainment, tours, children's activities, and more, Taste of the Bowl is designed to welcome newcomers to the Bowl and familiarize them with the summer's programming, parking, public transportation, dining and picnicking, the grounds, and the different seating areas at the Bowl. Taste of the Bowl is sponsored by The Patina Group.

Four musical genres will be spotlighted in live entertainment, with programmers and artistic directors from jazz, world music, classical, and weekend spectaculars available to answer questions about this summer's music programs at the Hollywood Bowl. Performances on May 4 include swing favorites by the Swingin' Deacons, reggae by Rocky Dawuni, jazz by The Henry Mancini Institute Alumni Jazz Ensemble, classical repertoire by the Henry Mancini Institute Alumni Wind Quintet, and hula by the Halau Keali'i O Nalani dancers. Strolling performers - jugglers, stiltwalkers, and clowns - lend a festive air to the day's events.

Seven food-tasting stations will feature diverse offerings from The Patina Group, the official caterer and food service provider at the Hollywood Bowl. The Bowl's snack, drink, and luncheon concessions will be open or one can bring their own lunch and eat at one of the Bowl's many picnic areas.

Los Angeles Philharmonic violinists Stacy Wetzel and Mitchell Newman will lead a free violin and viola workshop for middle school players at 2:30 PM. Participants should call in advance to reserve a space; call 323.850.2000. Other activities for children include mural painting, instrument building, collage making, and visiting the Musical Wall at the Hollywood Bowl Museum. Everyone may take a self-guided Bowl Walk (½ mile tour) of the Bowl's well-known and not-so-well-known treasures, or can join guided tours. Those attending can also have instant photos taken on the Bowl's famous stage.

Drawings for valuable prizes, including two round-trip tickets to Hawaii courtesy of United Airlines, will be held throughout the day.

Local jazz radio station KLON will broadcast live from the Bowl throughout the day with Arrow 93 FM, K-Earth 101.1, KBIG 104.3, and Hot 92.3 all on hand to play music for the crowd.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand with information about the programming, transportation, parking, access, picnicking, subscriptions, and group sales at the Bowl, and the newly renovated Bowl Store will be celebrating its grand re-opening for summer 2002. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates will be taking orders for the group's newly published The Hollywood Bowl Cookbook: Picnics Under the Stars, available online at hollywoodbowl.com and at the Bowl Store after May 15.

Last year, 5,000 Southern Californians visited the historic amphitheater for our first ever Taste of the Bowl, purchasing 10,000 tickets and breaking all records for a box-office opening day at the Hollywood Bowl.
