Chart-topping jazz artist Diana Krall returns to the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate her latest release, Quiet Nights, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Weekend Spectaculars series, Friday and Saturday, August 21 and 22, at 8:30 p.m. The first half of the program features the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by conductor Benjamin Wallfisch, in his Hollywood Bowl debut, and presents an exotic lineup of romantic, jazzy and Latin American orchestral music. This provides a perfect complement to the sultry selections of standards and sambas Krall performs with the LA Phil under the baton of Alan Broadbent during the second half of the evening.

The concert opens with composer Arturo Márquez’ Conga Del Fuego Nuevo followed by his Danzón No. 2, one of the most frequently performed contemporary Mexican classical music compositions. Next is Juan Tizol’s and Duke Ellington’s jazz standard Caravan, often referred to as the first Latin jazz song. The first half ends with Ernesto Lecuona’s Malagueña, a popular jazz, marching band and drum corps standard. Both Caravan and Malagueña were arranged for orchestra by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Morton Gould.

The second half of the concert pairs Krall with the orchestra as she performs selections from Quiet Nights. In addition to the LA Phil, Krall, on vocals and piano, is joined by her quartet members – Anthony Wilson, guitar; Robert Hurst, bass; and Jeff Hamilton, drums.

Krall’s Quiet Nights tour has met with high critical praise – the Vancouver Sun raved that her “distinctive pipes sound even better live,” and remarked on the stunning “warmth, expressed as she punctuated songs with anecdotes and humour throughout the show.”

Conductor Benjamin Wallfisch began composing at the age of 10 and, since 1996, has received more than 40 commissions for the concert hall, cinema, ballet and theater. He is currently working on a new CD for Natalie Cole. Acclaimed by The Strad as “one of the finest accompanists anywhere on the podium,” Wallfisch has performed concerti with some of the world’s finest soloists including Evelyn Glennie, Pekka Kuusisto, Freddy Kempf, Dame Felicity Lott, Branford Marsalis, Igor Oistrakh, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and John Williams.

Alan Broadbent has toured as musical director for Diana Krall and appears on her Live in Paris DVD. He has conducted for Linda Ronstadt in her concerts of Nelson Riddle’s orchestral arrangements and premiered Elvis Costello’s Il Sogno ballet suite conducting the major orchestras of the U.S. Whether working as a composer, arranger, conductor or pianist, he is widely respected and admired.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
