Ben Ullery
Violas Assistant Principal
Violist BEN ULLERY joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in January 2011 and became Assistant Principal Viola a year later. Prior to moving to L.A. he spent three seasons as a member of the Minnesota Orchestra. He has also performed frequently with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral activities, Ullery can be heard performing with various chamber ensembles around the Los Angeles area as well as frequently appearing on the LA Phil’s Chamber Music Society and Green Umbrella new-music series. He has been featured on chamber music performances broadcast on K-USC and Minnesota Public Radio.
In the summer, Ullery regularly performs at the Grand Teton Music Festival. He has also attended the Aspen, Taos, and Tanglewood festivals and performed as concertmaster of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. He is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Ullery is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied violin with Gregory Fulkerson and received numerous honors upon graduation. He later attended New England Conservatory and the Colburn School in Los Angeles, studying with James Buswell and Paul Coletti, respectively. He has also studied chamber music with members of the Guarneri, Takács, Vermeer, Borromeo, Miro, and St. Petersburg quartets.
