About the performer

Manuela Uhl

German soprano MANUELA UHL (Magna Peccatrix) sang Senta in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer in Liège in 2011. She will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in Los Angeles and Caracas conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Iphigénie en Aulide in Leipzig, Rienzi in Berlin, Das klagende Lied (with a CD recording) in Bonn, and Schreker’s Schatzgräber under Marc Albrecht in Amsterdam. In 2013 she will return to Berlin for Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Ring performances.

After having guested several times at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Manuela Uhl performs there regularly since the beginning of the 2006/07 season. In her first season she sang the leading female role in three new productions: Alberto Franchetti’s Germania, Zemlinsky’s Traumgörge, and Weber’s Der Freischütz. Later she sang Freia (Das Rheingold), the title role of The Cunning Little Vixen, Chrysothemis (Elektra), Nedda (I Pagliacci), and again Traumgörge. In 2008/09 she made her debut as Senta, and Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) with Deutsche Oper Berlin in China. She completed the season with two leading Strauss roles: Salome under Ulf Schirmer and Chrysothemis under Kazushi Ono.

In 2009 at Deutsche Oper she sang the Kaiserin (Die Frau ohne Schatten) under Ulf Schirmer; in 2010 the premiere (in concert) of Hermann Wolfgang von Waltershausen’s Oberst Chabert (including a CD recording); and in 2011 she performed Die Liebe der Danae under Andrew Litton as well as Venus and Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) under Donald Runnicles.

Manuela Uhl studied in Salzburg, Zurich, and Freiburg. She started her career in 1995 at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe where she performed, among others, Pamina and Königin der Nacht (Die Zauberflöte) as well as the title roles in Daphne (R. Strauss), Margarethe (Gounod), Armida (Haydn), and Anne Frank (Frid).

At the Bühnen der Landeshauptstadt Kiel Manuela Uhl got the chance to add important roles to her repertoire: she sang the leading female role in the creation of Franz Schreker’s Flammen, Roxanne in Alfano’s Cyrano as well as Aminta (Die schweigsame Frau) and Danae (Die Liebe der Danae) – both by Richard Strauss.

Manuela Uhl has guested at the state operas in Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Berlin, at Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Cologne, Essen, Braunschweig, Münster, Innsbruck, Wiesbaden, and Mannheim, and she performed leading roles at the Händel festivals in Karlsruhe and Halle. She was heard as Chrysothemis at Bayerischen Staatsoper Munich conducted by Kent Nagano, in Nice and – conducted by Semyon Bychkov – in Madrid, as Marie/Marietta (Die tote Stadt) at Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

As Salome Uhl opened the International May Festival Wiesbaden in 2008 and was highly acclaimed in Montpellier. In Tokyo she debuted in Beethoven’s Leonore.

In 2010 she sang, among others, Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) in Copenhagen, Chrysothemis in Baden-Baden under Christian Thielemann (with DVD) and Munich, Marie/Marietta in Madrid, as well as the title role in Iphigenie in Aulis in Leipzig.

As a concert singer she was heard in, among others, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony in Tokyo, Baden-Baden (Jonathan Nott), and Rome (Antonio Pappano); and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Dresden (Rafael Frübeck de Burgos), at the Vienna Musikverein, in Madrid (Miguel Gomez- Martinez), and Bonn (Stefan Blunier).

With the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn under Stefan Blunier she has recorded Schönberg’s Lieder Op. 8; a recording of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under Jonathan Nott is scheduled.
