Born in Slovakia, STEFAN KOCAN, one of the international leading basses of the younger generation, celebrates successes on major stages all over the world.
In the season 2012/2013, his engagements include his debut as Attila in a new production in Santiago de Chile, Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Ramfis in Aida at the Metropolitan Opera, Ramfis in Aida at the Qatar Amphitheater in Doha, Banco in Macbeth at the Teatro alla Scala, Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Filippo II in Don Carlo at the National Theater in Prague and Ramfis in Aida at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles Los Angeles.
Future plans for the season 2013/2014 and beyond will lead him amongst others to the Metropolitan Opera in Rigoletto, Eugen Onegin, Prince Igor, Aida, to La Scala in Milan as Filippo II in Don Carlo, to the Vlaamse Opera for his debut as Bluebeard in Bartok‘s Bluebeard’s Castle.
Stefan Kocan studied Vocal Arts at the University of Music in Bratislava. Later he continued at the Conservatory in Vienna with the well known Russian bass Jewgenij Nesterenko.
Yet during his education he became laureate of international singing competitions like the P.I. Tchaikowsky singing competition in Moscow, the competition of Hommage a Lucia Popp in Bratislava as well as the Belvedere competition Vienna.
After his studies he became an ensemble member at the Landestheater Linz, where he could be seen a. o. as Filippo II. («Don Carlo»), Sarastro («Die Zauberflöte»), Mephisto («Faust»), Banco («Macbeth»), Kecal («Verkaufte Braut»), Raimondo («Lucia di Lammermoor») and as Falstaff («Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor»).
2003/2004 he received the Eberhard Waechter- subsidy award for his Grande Inquisitore in «Don Carlos». This was followed by first guestings as Commendatore («Don Giovanni») and as Grande Inquisitore at the Vienna State Opera, where he now regularly gives guest performances.
Further engagements lead him amongst others to the Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, the Royal Danish Opera, the Opéra de Nice, to the Teatro Communale in Modena, the Teatro Ferrara, the Theatre Basel and to the Aalto Theatre in Essen, the Staatstheater Kassel, the State Opera Hannover and the National Opera Bratislava, the National Theater Prague where he sang roles such as Filippo II., Mephisto, Osmin, Mustafà («l'Italiana in Algeri»), Commendatore, Grande Inquisitore, La Voce del Nettuno («Idomeneo»), Roi Treff («L'amour des trois Oranges»), Water Spirit («Rusalka»).
During the season 2009-2010 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Il Re («Aida»), and could be heard as Banco in the new Production of «Macbeth» at the Vienna State Opera, a role with which he also made his debut at the Chicago Lyric Opera in autumn 2010. Guest performances lead him to the Munich State Opera as Osmin («Die Entführung aus dem Serail») and Zaccaria («Nabucco») and to Oper Köln as Sarastro («Die Zauberflöte»).
Performances of the season 2010/2011 include Osmin / Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Bavarian State Opera, Ferrando / Trovatore, und Sparafucile / Rigoletto at the Met, Great Inquisitor / Don Carlo (Met in Japan) as well as Sarastro / Die Zauberflöte in Cologne.
In 2011/2012, Stefan Kocan performed Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Commendatore in Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera, Masetto in Don Giovanni at La Scala in Milan (NP with Daniel Barenboim) and at the Staatsoper in Berlin and Ramfis in Aida at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
On the concert platform Stefan Kocan performs regularly Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven 9th Symphony. This season he performed Pater Profundis /Mahler VIII at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam under the baton of Mariss Jansons.
