Peter Lieberson was long and significantly associated with the LA Phil; among other important events, Esa-Pekka Salonen led the orchestra in the premiere of Lieberson’s Grawemeyer-winning Neruda Songs here at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2005. When Lieberson died in April 2011, he was working on a percussion concerto for us and soloist Pedro Carneiro. Shing Kham – the title reflects Lieberson’s long engagement with Tibetan Buddhism – is the completed portion of that concerto and its premiere makes a fitting centerpiece for the first weekend of this anniversary season.
