About This Performance
A composer herself as well as one of the great pianists of the era, Clara Schumann proved a compelling muse and champion for her husband throughout his life. He wrote the daunting keyboard part in his pioneering Piano Quintet for her, but when she became ill the day of the first performance, he had to settle for a friendly substitution. Felix Mendelssohn sight-read the part, and made a suggestion about the Scherzo movement that Schumann accepted, revising the new piece.
Brilliant young French pianist plays Schumann’s Piano Quintet with members of the LA Phil.
