Part of FR3 Friday Evening 3
About This Performance
When the late Ravi Shankar released his Second Sitar Concerto in 1981, it was conducted by none other than Zubin Mehta. Hear this rarely performed work, now in the loving hands of Shankar’s gifted daughter with its original conductor at the helm.
After intermission, it’s a specialty of Mehta with this orchestra: Richard Strauss’ (most likely autobiographical) tone poem for large orchestra Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), in which he frequently quotes his own music.
There are depictions of the hero (Strauss), his companion (his wife), and his adversaries (the critics). The German critics responded in kind: “as revolting a picture of this revolting man as one might ever encounter.” Nonetheless, audiences ever since have embraced it as a favorite in the orchestral repertoire.
