Part of FR2 Friday Evening 2
About This Performance
Steven Mackey’s violin concerto Beautiful Passing had its very successful premiere here in May 2011. Stumble to Grace, Mackey’s first concerted work featuring the piano, suggests a pianist’s journey from stumbling beginnings to graceful virtuosity, as well as “various stages of progress and regress in the physical and spiritual evolution of the piano.”
The husband-and-wife team of Robertson and Shaham in a powerful new piano concerto.
The concerts culminate in Mussorgsky’s fanciful, powerful musical paintings.

Daniel Kessner interviewed Orli Shaham where she shared insights on her collaboration with composer Steven Mackey and her husband, Conductor David Robertson for the first fifteen minutes. Steven Mackey stayed for the entire time where he spoke about his piece Stumble to Grace (West Coast Premiere, LA Phil co-commission with generous support from Sandy and Barry D. Pressman).
