Part of TH2 Thursday 2
Sibelius: Humoresques, Op. 87
About This Performance
Sibelius was the right genius at the right time. Just as Finland was pulling away from Russia, he emerged, not just as a world-class composer, but also as the voice of his people and their collective longing. The country has never forgotten the gifts Sibelius bestowed on it during its struggle for freedom.
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence, we have our Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen – the greatest living conductor/composer from Finland – leading Sibelius’ final two symphonies, less frequently heard masterpieces that demonstrate where his musical thinking was headed.
In between, our Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour treats us to the composer’s Humoresques for violin and orchestra, which are like mini one-movement concertos.
