About This Performance
The brilliant Christian Tetzlaff plays Dvořák’s lyrical Violin Concerto. Eschenbach matches it with Schoenberg’s dazzling orchestration of Brahms’ G-minor Piano Quartet, which sounds like a new Brahms symphony, in vivid, expanded colors.
It’s not surprising that Brahms took such an interest in Dvořák’s success; there are few pairs of composers who shared such a close musical approach. Inspired by Brahms’ Violin Concerto, Dvořák also composed his only Violin Concerto in a minor key, using the exact orchestral forces as his mentor. When you hear Tetzlaff play the Dvořák, you’ll experience Brahmsian nobility, a similar seriousness of purpose, and an appealing lyricism that has placed Dvořák’s work among the top concerto repertory.
Closing the program is Schoenberg’s orchestration of Brahms’ G-minor Piano Quartet. A huge Brahms fan, Schoenberg said he felt frustrated with the balance of this quartet, the piano being too dominant. To remedy this lopsided effect, he arranged the music for modern orchestra, in the process adding colors and sounds that Brahms never dreamed of.
