Part of TH1 Thursday 1
About This Performance
The ever-charming Bramwell Tovey frames this program with Walton’s Jazz Age sass and the Romantic passion of Tchaikovsky’s fairy tale lovers.
In between, Sibelius’ lone concerto is played by the charismatic Ray Chen, who began violin lessons when he was four. At eight, he was invited to solo with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the first-prize winner at the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition at 19, and a year later, won the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition. Sony Classical signed him at 21. “Colors dance, moods swing, and Chen’s artistry blazes.” (The Times)
