The principles of equity, diversity, access, and inclusion are central to the work of the LA Phil. From the events happening on our stages to the ways we engage our community to how we interact with one another in our offices and backstage, we are guided by values that center and respect the incredible range of lived human experience.
We remain committed to ensuring that the music we make is both artistically ambitious and widely available, reaching across generations and the many communities of Los Angeles.
EDI Guiding Statement
The LA Phil believes in and supports the importance of diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and a discrimination-free organization, as well as the role music and the arts have to play in building a better, more compassionate world.
The LA Phil began its life as an orchestra in 1919. Today, the orchestra is the foundation and heart of an institution that has evolved to also include a wide range of performing arts presentations, the music learning initiative YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), the stewardship of four venues—Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, The Ford, and the Beckmen YOLA Center—and a growing media presence.
We are guided by the belief that our present actions shape our future. We take responsibility for the future through our actions and aspirations today.
Reflecting our county on stage
Across our venues, we strive to program a diverse range of artists and music that reflect the vibrancy of Los Angeles.
Commissioning
As one of the largest commissioners of new music in the country, we seek to expand the canon to represent diverse voices.
Spanish-Speaking Audiences
In addition to translation services, we partner with Spanish-language media and work with local cultural organizations.
AAPI Audiences
We partner with The Korea Times and Radio Seoul, work with AAPI-centered media, and highlight AAPI artists.
Black & BIPOC Audiences
We celebrate BIPOC artists on our stage, commission visual art from BIPOC designers, and foster partnerships with Black organizations.
Lowering Barriers
To make our programs more accessible, we have established policies to serve seniors, community partners, students, and more.
Nurturing the next generation of musical innovators
Independent and emerging artists, presenters, and producers receive mentorship, marketing assistance, and more.
