Dudamel Conducts Hearne and Rzewski
On this program, Gustavo Dudamel leads the New Music Group in an early Minimalist masterpiece and a major recent addition to the string orchestra literature. American composer Frederic Rzewski wrote Coming Together in response to the 1971 Attica prison rebellion. He underscored a text from a letter by one of the inmate leaders killed in the riot with a driving bass line, layered with cross-phasing parts for a variable ensemble – any number of instruments. Ted Hearne composed Law of Mosaics – how to deal with parts in the absence of wholes – for the string ensemble A Far Cry in 2012, inspired by David Shields’ book Reality Hunger, a patchwork manifesto on art and digital culture.
Opening the evening is an installment from Peruvian Pauchi Sasaki’s on-going Gama project. An instrument designer as well as a violinist and composer, Sasaki created this piece – and the dresses, made up of 96 small speakers – for Claire Chase.
