By juxtaposing Ives’ and Dvořák’s symphonies, Dudamel reveals new ways to hear each composer. Here, Ives’ compact Third draws on memories of songs, hymns, children’s games, and dances to create music of wondrous complexity. Dvořák’s final symphony was composed from Native-American and African-American source materials, from which he drew unforgettable melodies and dramatic harmonies that gelled into his most popular creation.
