McRae’s songs give shape to life’s most profound choices. “You can leave the city, you can leave the lover, but you can never leave yourself,” she says. The emotionally crushing, expertly written folk songs on her latest release, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!, explore the ways that we’re shaped by both love and its loss. You can hear the effects of both in her exceptional, acrobatic voice. Wispy and textured at times, clear and bright at others, her singing is as surprising and rich with meaning as her lyrics. It’s no wonder Pitchfork said she “seems to chew on each phrase that passes her lips, savoring it, making it sound irresistible.” The LA-based singer-songwriter brings her razor-sharp lyrics and timeless pop melodies to the Hall for her debut.
