About this Performance
“Take it easy...animal—oh dear ... help! —catch your breath! —get going, get going! ... thank heaven!” These are just a few of the many instructions Mozart wrote in his horn music manuscripts. A lifelong jokester, Mozart made it a point to write demanding parts with a bouncy and light-hearted tone. In the same fashion, his String Quartet No. 22 is elegant, energetic, and brimming with exciting polyphony.
Also on the program is Gabriella Smith’s innovative reimagination of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and Caroline Shaw’s soulful Haydn-inspired Entr’acte, which she says, “suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition.”
