Dvořák & Shostakovich (Rescheduled)

Chamber Music with Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic

Thu / Jan 22, 2026 - 8:00PM

The rustic radiance of Bohemia meets the emotive depth of a 1940s wartime trio.

About this Performance

The secret sauce to what makes Dvořák’s G-major String Quintet so delectable is its incorporation of warm, hearty Bohemian folk elements as well as a rich and mighty double bass. While bass with string quartet is a less common chamber music combo, it’s certainly a satisfying choice for this work, giving it a greater, more robust range.

Written after the passing of a dear friend, Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio is soaked with both sorrow and splendor, best represented by its delicate pizzicato, cascading patterns, and compulsive rhythms—one of which builds upon a Jewish folk melody and appears in the final “dance of death” movement.

Also on the program is a “Passionate” Trio by Glinka—the “father of almost all things dealing with Russian music”—and selections by Mark O’Connor, a fiddle player and composer best known for his “powerful, sweet, nasty, and gritty” (Strings) style.

Come early and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine before the performance, starting at 6:30pm.
