About this Performance
John Adams, the John and Samantha Williams Creative Chair, curates the third installment of the LA Phil Etudes, a project highlighting each of the orchestra’s principal musicians in solo pieces by today’s leading composers. In Book 3, Francisco Coll writes a Baroque social media-inspired work for the trombone, Samuel Adams brings new ideas to the bass, and Nico Muhly showcases the agility of the harp.
Elim Chan leads the LA Phil New Music Group in a new work by up-and-coming Spanish composer Sílvia Lanao, and “one of the heroes of the new-music world” (San Francisco Chronicle), Gloria Cheng, returns for a world premiere piece by Anthony Cheung—a composer known for his gritty, inventive approach and affinity for the pitches inside the cracks of the piano keyboard.
