About this Performance
Richard Strauss’ tone poems are arguably among some of the most richly orchestrated and strikingly adventurous pieces written for orchestra. Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is no exception as it closely follows the composer’s own real-life conflicts, resolutions, and romances along the way through its bold battle music, soaring melodies, and passionate spirit.
Join Gustavo Dudamel as he conducts Strauss’ heroic journey for the first time in Los Angeles after the LA Phil performs a brand-new orchestral piece by Roberto Sierra—the Puerto Rican composer known for his unique fusion of European modernism and Latin American folk elements called “tropicalization.”
A note from Gustavo Dudamel
The orchestra and I opened the 2025/26 season with Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony. In our final weeks of the season, we revisit Strauss’ world with another one of his monumental works: A Hero’s Journey. In this brilliantly colored symphonic poem, the musicians from Strauss’ very large orchestra portray significant characters and themes from his life. It offers us a great opportunity to celebrate the amazing artistry of all of the members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The program begins with the world premiere of Roberto Sierra’s Estudios Sinfónicos. After performing Roberto’s vibrant Alegría, it is a great pleasure to realize this new piece. Like Strauss, Roberto paints with music. But where Strauss brings us the colors of Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, Roberto speaks in a voice shaped by many worlds, blending the energy of European modernism with the rhythms and spirit of his Puerto Rican roots. He imagines his music almost like a painting by Kandinsky, full of bold lines, color, and freedom. —Gustavo Dudamel
