About this Performance
From the grand Trevi Fountain to the bucolic setting of the Janiculum overlooking the eternal city, Respighi’s Fountains and Pines of Rome capture the history, beauty, and magic of the city he called home. The composer’s lush and colorful reliefs come to life under the baton of Roberto González-Monjas, “a conductor who knows how to shape a phrase and take care of the details” (Crescendo Magazine).
“[Clara-Jumi] Kang is clearly a rising star, or should I say risen star,” says Seen and Heard International, which called her playing “nothing short of staggering, both in terms of intensity, technique and passion.” She returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall with one of Prokofiev’s most lyrical works. Combining influences of Tchaikovsky with the composer’s own sardonic voice, the Second Violin Concerto would be the last work Prokofiev completed before returning to the USSR under Stalin.
This performance is generously supported in part by the Kohl Virtuoso Violin Fund.
