CSUN Wind Ensemble

About this Artist

Among the innumerable collegiate wind ensembles found throughout North America, a select few distinguish themselves from the pack, having established a heritage of musical excellence while keeping a steadfast vision toward a relevant and profound musical future. The CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY NORTHRIDGE WIND ENSEMBLE is among these few, and has long been a hallmark of the excellence associated with the university’s renowned music department. On the verge of a year-long 50th-anniversary season, the band program at CSUN is dedicated to the promotion of concert band literature, performing the finest repertoire and bringing this music to the people of California and beyond. The CSUN Wind Ensemble is wholly invested in the university’s mission to be regionally focused and nationally recognized.

LAWRENCE STOFFEL returned to his native California when he became the Director of Bands at California State University, Northridge in 2004. There, he serves as conductor of both the internationally recognized Wind Ensemble and the Wind Symphony. As an associate professor of music, he also teaches courses in conducting and music education. Previously, Dr. Stoffel served on the faculties of Northern Illinois University (where he was honored with the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award), Eastern Illinois University, and the University of California, San Diego. With a breadth of scholarly and artistic interests, Dr. Stoffel has been published and given lectures on wide-ranging topics – from musical interpretation to copyright law and from the use of religious music in public schools to band discography. His book, A Discography of Concert Band Recordings on Compact Disc (Edwin Mellen Press), was honored last year by the Association for Recorded Sound Collections for Outstanding Discography in the field of classical music.
