Canadian soprano VALDINE ANDERSON is renowned for the wide range of her operatic and concert repertoire, from the Baroque to the contemporary. In 1995 Anderson made her European operatic debut in the role of the Maid in the world première of Almeida Opera's production of Thomas Adès' opera Powder Her Face at the Cheltenham Festival, with subsequent performances at the Almeida Theatre. She recreated this role with great success for Opéra de Nantes in their 2001/02 season. In 1998 Anderson made her English National Opera debut in Gavin Bryar's Dr. Ox's Experiment and in 2000 she appeared in concert performances of Elliott Carter's opera What Next? at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. She also performed the role in Belgium in 2002.
Her concert appearances in the UK have included a performance of Boulez' Pli selon pli with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Edinburgh Festival in 1999, and with the same orchestra Mahler's Symphony No. 4, which has now been released on CD by BBC Worldwide. She also performs regularly with the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Nash Ensemble, and she made her BBC Proms debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Mark Elder in 1998. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season, Anderson made a highly successful recital debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Elsewhere Anderson has appeared with orchestras including L'Orchestre National de France, L'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared with Gavin Bryar's Ensemble, the Hilliard Ensemble, Asko Ensemble, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Highlights have included a concert in the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, a tour with the Nash Ensemble, a concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, concerts with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, and debuts with the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also completed tours with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and a combination of Ensemble Contrechamps, Collegium Novum Zurich, and Ensemble Phoenix Basel in performances of Pli selon pli, all conducted by Pierre Boulez. Recently she has made highly successful debuts with the Orchestre de Paris, Chicago Chamber Musicians, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester. In November 2003 she gave a concert tour performing Dutilleux' Correspondences with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, including a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Future engagements include a concert performance of Powder Her Face at the Barbican in London, concerts with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and The Ballad of Baby Doe for Calgary Opera.
Anderson's many recordings include Maxwell Davies' Job (Collins), Freedman's Spirit Song, Adès' Five Eliot Landscapes (EMI), Lutoslawski's Chantefleurs et Chantefables (BIS), Bryars' Adnan's Songbook, Torke's Book of Proverbs (Decca), a CD of the BBC Proms performance of Szymanowski's Songs of a Fairy Princess (BBC Music), Adès' Powder Her Face (EMI), which was nominated for a Grammy, and, most recently, Carter's What Next? (ECM). Future releases include a CD of Webern Songs with the Nieuw Ensemble.
