Enjoying a rich and vibrant genre-crossing conducting career, MARC LOWENSTEIN’s work has been described as an “assured conductor” by The New York Times and “awe-inspiring” by The New Yorker. Last year he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in Lou Harrison’s Young Caesar, described by the Los Angeles Times as “sensational, revealing layer upon layer of sheer musical gorgeousness.” Marc is the founding Music Director of The Industry, and regularly conducts the Gurrisonic jazz orchestra. He previously served as Music Director of the Berkeley Contemporary Opera and conducted on New York City Opera’s Vox opera workshop program for four years. He has conducted several other operatic premieres, and, with The Industry, Marc has conducted Anne LeBaron’s Crescent City, Christopher Cerrone’s Invisible Cities, three iterations of the new opera workshops First Take, the workshop production of Andy Akiho’s Galileo, and was Music Director for In C and Hopscotch.
As a composer, Marc has written several long-form pieces based on concepts of Jewish and Buddhist meditations. He was one of the principal composers of Hopscotch and has written two and a half other operas. As a tenor, Marc has sung 25 five opera roles including the premiere of Madeline X in Michael Gordon’s What to Wear. He holds the Roy E. Disney Family Chair in Music Composition in the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts and is writing a course for Coursera entitled “There is No Such Thing as Music Theory.”
