THE POLYPHONIC SPREE came to life on July 15, 2000. There comes a time in the life of most artists when what they want to do is much more than what they are allowed to do. Out of this frustration with the established process comes a new creation, something original, fresh. In this case it is The Polyphonic Spree, the brainchild of Tim DeLaughter. The Polyphonic Spree is an ongoing experiment/family with one man’s vision and the talent of more than 2 dozen accomplished musicians/voices propelling the venture.

The sound is evolving. Currently, it is harnessed under the term “choral symphonic pop band” until its own truly unique “catch phrase” is coined. Their latest album, Together We’re Heavy, hit stores last summer.

This band warrants a description all its own, since nothing around is like it. The Polyphonic Spree have come a long way. From singing into a fan as a youth to having a 10-person choir back him in this, his ultimate realization, DeLaughter serves as a conductor of sorts. While DeLaughter writes the basis of the songs, the other members of The Polyphonic Spree, who range in age from 15 to 36, improvise to come up with their “parts.” The band features familiar faces from the days of Tripping Daisy: Mark Pirro, Bryan Wakeland, and Tim DeLaughter but don’t, repeat, don’t dare mix or confuse the two.

The Polyphonic Spree is its own living breathing, entity. This music is best experienced live: 23 people clothed in white robes, singing and dancing their hearts out to give you almost a Broadway revival of sorts. Jaws drop, tears are shed, and smiles are born. Much like life, The Polyphonic Spree represents/mirrors just that. It attempts to play out on stage the fable/parable that is life through music and song. The Polyphonic Spree is a journey, as is life. You never know where it will take you.
