American soprano CAROL VANESS is noted for the breadth of her repertoire, which ranges from Handel’s Alcina to Barber’s Cleopatra and includes all of Mozart’s major soprano roles and the heroines in many of Verdi’s greatest operas, from I vespri siciliani to Otello. She has also performed the title roles of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, Puccini’s Tosca, Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride, and, recently, Bellini’s Norma. Vaness has appeared at Milan’s La Scala, Paris’ Opéra Bastille, the German Opera Berlin, Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and the Glydebourne Festival. She regularly performs at the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and San Francisco Opera, and has worked with many distinguished conductors, including James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev, and Zubin Mehta.

Her discography includes Tosca led by Riccardo Muti, two recordings of Don Giovanni (as Donna Anna under Bernard Haitink and as Donna Elvira under Muti), Iphigénie en Tauride from La Scala, Così fan tutte, Le Nozze di Figaro (as the Countess) conducted by Charles Mackerras, Idomeneo led by James Levine, an album of “Diva Scenes,” two solo recordings of Mozart and Verdi arias, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis, Britten’s War Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, an album of Haydn masses, and the Verdi Requiem. She appeared as Magda in Los Angeles Opera’s production of Puccini’s La rondine this spring and will portray Amelia in Simon Boccanegra next season at San Francisco Opera.
