Soprano ELENA ZELENSKAYA was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, and graduated from the Baku State Conservatory before becoming a soloist with the Baku Opera and Ballet Theatre Company. After winning prizes in several vocal competitions, she joined the Moscow New Opera and made a successful debut in the title role of Puccini’s Tosca with the Bolshoi Opera, becoming a principal artist there. Among her roles with the company are Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, the Countess in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and the title role in Verdi’s Aida. Zelenskaya has appeared regularly at the Mozart Festival at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace. She has recently had great success as Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth in Lucerne and as Leonora in the same composer’s La forza del destino at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. In 2001, Zelenskaya will make her Metropolitan Opera Debut as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera. She makes her Los Angeles Philharmonic debut at these concerts.
