About this Artist

I am a musician, artist and music educator. My teaching is primarily based on the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education, combining creative movement, improvisation, music games, singing, body percussion and a variety of percussion instruments. I am passionate about building community through the arts, and believe in teaching to childrens' multiple intelligences, engaging students with different strengths, interests and experiences in actively creating music.

I was raised in a musical family and began playing the violin at my local public elementary school in Culver City. I discovered klezmer (East European Jewish folk music) in high school and have played it ever since. I received my B.A. in music from Pomona College in Claremont and my multiple subject teaching credential and M.A. in Teaching at the University of Southern California. Following 3 years as a full-time Teaching Artist with P.S. ARTS in the Lawndale school district, I began my work as Early Childhood Specialist with Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) in 2010.

As a Teaching Artist with the LA Philharmonic, I can offer collaboration in:

A focus on primary grades (K-3), with lessons through grade 5

Creative movement activities, folk dances and music games

Introduction to musicianship and basic musical concepts through active music-making

Improvisation and composition on a variety of instruments, particularly small classroom percussion

Folk and world repertoire for singing and accompaniment by classroom instruments

Interdisciplinary lessons with connections to core subject matter

I believe the classroom teacher knows their students best, and I understand the importance of working with the teacher to meet the needs of their students and their curriculum through engaging, relevant lessons that give students a chance to participate in music-making.
